Category: About You & Motivation
Target Role: Principal Engineer, Senior Staff Engineer
Question
"What is the most valuable feedback you've received from a manager?"
Strong Answer Example
"The most valuable feedback I received was from my manager at Google when I was a Staff Engineer: 'You're optimizing for being right instead of being effective.'
This feedback came after a particularly challenging design review for a new recommendation system. I had spent weeks designing what I considered the 'perfect' technical solution β it was elegant, scalable, and theoretically optimal. However, when I presented it to the cross-functional team, I encountered significant pushback.
Instead of adapting my approach, I became more entrenched in my technical arguments. I created additional technical documentation, ran more detailed analyses, and essentially tried to 'win' the debate through technical superiority. While my solution was technically sound, I failed to understand the team's actual constraints and constraints.
