Mistakes & Learning from Failure - Level 201: Helping Team Members Learn from Mistakes (Question 2)
Question: Tell me about a time when you had to help a team member who made a significant mistake or experienced a failure. How did you approach mentoring them through the learning process?
Strong Answer Example:
Context: "At Netflix, one of my senior engineers, Sarah, accidentally deployed a change that caused our recommendation system to show completely random content to users for about 2 hours. This affected over 500,000 users and was a major incident. Sarah was devastated and was considering leaving the company."
Immediate Crisis Response: "When the incident occurred, my first priority was addressing the immediate issue: I immediately took over incident response to let Sarah focus on understanding what happened; I coordinated with the SRE team to roll back the changes and restore normal service; I handled communication with leadership and customer support while Sarah analyzed the technical root cause; I made sure Sarah knew that our focus was on fixing the problem, not assigning blame."
