Question 1: Innovative Problem Solving Approach
Question: Tell me about a time when you came up with a new approach to solve a technical problem. What was the problem, what was your approach, and what was the outcome?
Strong Answer Example
At Meta, I was working on an ads serving optimization project where we were constantly hitting memory limits that were causing data processing delays. The problem was that our existing batch processing approach was loading entire datasets into memory, causing out-of-memory errors when processing large campaigns.
Initial Problem Analysis:
The existing system worked fine for small to medium campaign sizes, but with the growth in enterprise clients handling millions of daily impressions, we were seeing 30%+ failures in large batch jobs. Our current approach loaded all ad targeting data upfront, then processed events in memory. As campaign complexity grew with more targeting segments and creative variations, the memory footprint became unsustainable.
