Going Above and Beyond for Team Members
Level: 101 (Entry to Mid-Level)
Category: Leadership & Team Development
Question: Tell me about a time you went above and beyond to help a team member or support your team in a meaningful way.
Strong Answer Example
At Netflix, one of my teammates, Mike, was going through a difficult personal situation. His father had been hospitalized unexpectedly, and Mike was trying to balance work responsibilities with being there for his family. I could see he was struggling both emotionally and professionally, missing deadlines and seeming increasingly stressed.
Recognizing the Need:
Mike was a talented engineer, but for about three weeks, his work quality and morale had significantly declined. During standups, he'd say things like "Still working on the same features" and seemed disconnected from our team. I learned from a mutual colleague that his father was ill and in the hospital.
Taking Initiative to Help:
Instead of just being understanding about his reduced performance, I took concrete steps to help:
- I reached out to Mike privately to let him know I was thinking of him and his family
- I offered to take over some of his pending tasks so he could focus on what mattered most
- I coordinated with our team lead to redistribute Mike's most urgent deliverables
- I set up daily check-ins just to offer support and see if there was anything practical I could help with
Going Beyond the Call of Duty:
My support went beyond just taking over his work:
- I handled his code reviews to ensure his contributions weren't blocked
- I communicated with stakeholders on his behalf when needed
- I created a detailed summary of his project status so he could easily catch up when he returned
- I organized a team contribution to help with meals for his family during this time
The Impact:
- Mike was able to focus on his family without constant stress about work
- Our team maintained our delivery schedule because his work didn't block others
- Mike's manager later told me this support was crucial in helping Mike through a very difficult time
- The experience strengthened our team's culture of mutual support
- Other team members began checking in on each other more regularly
Long-term Effects:
- Mike returned to work with renewed energy and appreciation for his team
- Our team established a formal system for supporting colleagues during personal emergencies
- The incident improved trust and communication across our entire team
- I learned that sometimes leadership means doing whatever it takes to support your colleagues
