Chapter 6: Group Chat Behavior – Managing Multi-User Conversations

Group chats transform intimate one-on-one exchanges into bustling community spaces, where a single voice can spark discussion among dozens. Yet, this multiplicity brings unique challenges—imagine coordinating a symphony where every musician must play in perfect harmony, even across devices and networks. In this chapter, we dissect group chat behaviors, from managing memberships and ensuring consistent ordering to architecting fanout that scales gracefully. We'll explore how messages fan out to multiple recipients, how acknowledgments track per-user states, and how admins wield powers to maintain order. Designed to handle hundreds of millions of users with groups up to 256 members, this deep dive ensures our system delights in diversity without descending into chaos.

2. Group Conversation Model

2.1 Group Metadata

Group conversations are modeled with essential metadata stored in the Conversations table, capturing the conversation_id, type set to 'GROUP', title for the group's name, icon_url for its visual representation, created_at timestamp marking its inception, and creator_user_id identifying the founding user. This metadata encapsulates the group's descriptive elements, including its name and icon, the precise moment of creation, the user who initiated it, and any optional group-level settings that influence overall behavior.
